It's Time to Get Involved - Available Positions on Various City Boards!

Traverse City residents are invited to serve on one of the city's citizen boards and committees. Through this service, civic-minded citizens can become involved in their local government. The city, in turn, benefits from the knowledge, experience and expertise of our citizens.

Arts Commission

The Arts Commission is responsible for promoting arts in the community, and advising the City Commission on matters pertaining to the arts programs within the city. The Traverse City Arts Commission meets monthly on the third Wednesday.

Election Commission

The primary purpose of the Election Commission is to appoint Election Inspector in advance of each election. Members of this board have minimal commitment, meeting approximately two times a year.

Traverse City Light and Power Board (Applications due March 2nd)

Typically meets once a month, this board has exclusive jurisdiction, control and management of the Light and Power Department and all its operations and facilities. Unless specifically allocated to the City Commission or to a City official, the Board has all of the powers and duties possessed by the City to construct, acquire, expand and operate the Light and Power system.

Human Rights Commission

The Human Rights Commission fosters mutual understanding and respect among all groups and discourages discriminatory practices, formulate and carry out programs of community education and information, receive and act as conciliator regarding occurrences of acts of prejudice or discrimination, and secure the cooperation of various community groups. This board meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 pm.

Historic Districts Commission

The goals of the Historic Districts Commission are to safeguard the heritage of our City; to preserve cultural, political or architectural history; to preserve historic landmarks; to foster civic beauty and more. The Commission meets the last Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Board of Zoning Appeals

The purpose of the Board of Zoning Appeals is to hear and decide on appeals brought to the Building Official, Zoning Administrator, etc. and to interpret provisions of the Zoning Code. The Board’s regular meeting date is the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Board of Tax Review

The purpose of the Board of Tax Review is to examine, review, and correct the assessment roll. Members of this board have minimal commitment, only meeting periodically throughout the year.  This person should be a City resident. 

City of Traverse City and Charter Township of Garfield Recreational Authority Board

The Authority is incorporated for the purpose of the acquisition, construction, operation, maintenance or improvement of public recreation centers, public parks, and public conference centers as may be acquired by the Authority or as may be transferred to it by a participating municipality. This board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for all boards and commissions and are kept on file for a period of one year; applicants must not be in default to the City.
