Available Positions on Various City Boards!
Traverse City residents are invited to serve on one of the city's citizen boards and committees. Through this service, civic-minded citizens can become involved in their local government. The city, in turn, benefits from the knowledge, experience and expertise of our citizens.
Coast Guard City Committee
This committee serves in an advisory capacity to the City Commission to make recommendations on matters relating to the operation, development and planning of United States Coast Guard services, facilities and programs within the City of Traverse City. This board meets the first Thursday of each month at 3:00 pm.
Parks and Recreation
The primary purpose of the Parks and Recreation Commission is to make recommendations (advisory capacity) to the City Commission on matters relating to the operation, development, and planning of parks, recreation and cemetery services and activities. This board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm.
Downtown Development Authority
The purpose of this board is to increase property values in the business district of the City and promote economic growth. This board regularly meets the third Friday of each month at 8:00 am.
Human Rights Commission
The Human Rights Commission fosters mutual understanding and respect among all groups and discourages discriminatory practices, formulate and carry out programs of community education and information, receive and act as conciliator regarding occurrences of acts of prejudice or discrimination, and secure the cooperation of various community groups. This board meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 pm.
Traverse City Light and Power
Typically meets once a month, this board has exclusive jurisdiction, control and management of the Light and Power Department and all its operations and facilities. Unless specifically allocated to the City Commission or to a City official, the Board has all of the powers and duties possessed by the City to construct, acquire, expand and operate the Light and Power system.
Board of Tax Review
The purpose of the Board of Tax Review is to examine, review, and correct the assessment roll. Members of this board have minimal commitment, only meeting periodically throughout the year. This person should be a City resident.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for all boards and commissions and are kept on file for a period of one year; applicants must not be in default to the City.
