City Commissioner Michele Howard submitted her resignation from the City Commission to City Clerk Benjamin Marentette; her resignation is effective September 23, 2019. Commissioner Howard’s term expires November 8, 2021. A copy of Commissioner Howard’s resignation is attached to this media release.
Commissioner Howard was appointed to the City Commission on December 8, 2016, to fill a vacancy left when former Commissioner Ross Richardson resigned. Commissioner Howard was subsequently elected to a full four-year term by city voters at the November 7, 2017, election. Marentette indicated, “It has been a pleasure to work with Commissioner Howard and watch her enthusiasm and energy devoted to Traverse City. We look forward to working with her over the next few months and wish her well as she transitions toward leading the Traverse Area District Library.”
According to City Clerk Benjamin Marentette, the City Charter allows the City Commission to appoint someone to serve from the effective date of Commissioner Howard’s resignation until November 11, 2019. A discussion on if the City Commission wishes to pursue appointing someone to fill Commissioner Howard’s seat from September 23, 2019, to November 11, 2019,is scheduled for the July 8, 2019, City Commission Meeting. The balance of Commissioner Howard’s term, which will expire November 8, 2021, will be filled at the November 5, 2019, election.
The City Clerk’s Office will have the necessary paperwork to file for election to the final two years of Commissioner Howard’s term available on Tuesday, July 2, 2019; and the filing deadline for election to the seat is Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at 4 p.m. with the City Clerk’s Office.
