The Traverse City Fire Department is accepting donations of unused or unopened toys for children up to 12 years old. 

Donations can be dropped off to Fire Station 1, at 510 W. Front St., or to the Governmental Center Lobby, at 400 Boardman Ave.

If you would like to request toys for your family, please fill out the form below and return to the Fire Station at 500 W. Front Street.

Cass Street

Christmas Tree Placement

TRAVERSE CITY- The City of Traverse City and Elmer’s Crane and Dozer, Inc. will be closing Cass Street North of E Front Street due to the placement of the Christmas Tree.  The work is expected to begin at 8:30am and be finished before 4:00pm on Monday, November 28, 2016.

The work will require the Street to be closed to all traffic while the work is being done.

Please use alternate routes avoiding this area to reduce congestion, delay and inconvenience for your travels. Appropriate signage and barricades will be in place in and around the work areas.

This construction will generate dust, noise and cause inconvenience. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation. Please feel free to call Derek Melville at 922-4910 if you have any questions, comments or concerns about the work or the schedule.

Pavement Coring

TRAVERSE CITY- The City of Traverse City and Elmer’s Crane and Dozer, Inc. will be performing pavement coring in W. Front St. between Elmwood Ave. and Division St. The work is expected to begin at 8:30 am and be finished before 5:00 pm on Thursday, November 17th.

W. Front St. will remain open to two-way traffic however on-street parking will be prohibited on W. Front St. at N. Spruce St. and N. Cedar St. Minor delays can be expected.              

Please use alternate routes avoiding these areas to reduce congestion, delay and inconvenience for your travels.

City Clerk Benjamin Marentette is accepting applications on behalf of the City Commission for those interested in being appointed to the City Commission to fill a vacancy left by former Mayor Pro Tem Ross Richardson. The individual appointed will serve until the Commission’s Organizational Meeting of Monday, November 13, 2017.

To be considered, you must be a registered voter of the City of Traverse City for thirty consecutive days and not be past due on amounts owed to the City.  

The City Commission functions as the City’s legislative body, essentially functioning as the board of directors for City government.   For more information on the functions of the City Commission, please visit http://www.traversecitymi.gov/city_commission.asp

This is a tremendous opportunity to serve the community in a responsible position that sets far-reaching policy (including through adoption of the City budget) that has an impact throughout the region and State of Michigan.

Mayor Pro Tem Ross Richardson provided the City Manager and City Clerk with his resignation from the City Commission today; and his resignation is effective immediately.  The resignation is attached to this press release.

The seat previously held by Mr. Richardson expires on November 13, 2017.  With the resignation of Ross Richardson from the City Commission, he also automatically relinquishes his seats from the following boards, which he holds by virtue of his seat on the City Commission:

  • Traverse City Planning Commission
  • Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority
  • Next Michigan Corporation Board

At the November 14, 2016, Organizational Meeting, the City Commission will discuss the process for filling the vacancy created by the resignation.   Those options include appointing an adult resident of the City to fill the remainder of the term which expires November 13, 2017, calling a Special Election in May 2017 to fill the remainder of the term; or appointing someone to fill the vacancy until an election in May 2017, with the individual elected in May 2017 serving until November 13, 2017.

The City of Traverse City thanks Mayor Pro Tem Richardson for his service on the City Commission and wishes he and his family well.

Traverse City residents are invited to participate in the process of government by serving on one of the city's citizen boards and committees. Through this service, civic-minded citizens can become involved in their local government. The city, in turn, benefits from the knowledge, experience and expertise of our citizens.

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission member shall be a representative of important segments of the community, such as the economic, governmental, educational, and social development of the local unit of government, in accordance with the major interests as they exist in the local unit of government, such as agriculture, natural resources, recreation, education, public health, government, transportation, industry and commerce. This person shall be a City resident. 

Human Rights Commission
The purpose of this commission is to foster mutual understanding and respect among all groups and discourage discriminatory practices, formulate and carry out programs of community education and information, receive and act as conciliator regarding occurrences of acts of prejudice or discrimination, and secure the cooperation of various community groups in educational campaigns devoted to eliminating prejudice and discrimination. This person is not required to be a City resident. 

Board of Tax Review
The purpose of the Board of Tax Review is to examine, review, and correct the assessment roll. Members of this board have minimal commitment, only meeting periodically throughout the year.  This person shall be a City resident. 

Local Officers Compensation Commission
This Commission determines the salaries of such local elected offices, which determination shall be the salaries of the legislative bodies.  This board is a low commitment, meeting only in odd years. This person shall be a City resident.

Cass Street Closing

November 3-4, 2016

 

TRAVERSE CITY- Motorists and pedestrians should be aware that the City of Traverse City Street Department will be closing a portion of Cass Street from Fifteenth to Seventeenth Street starting Thursday, November 3, to repair two manhole structures. This work will be completed by November 04, weather permitting.

The work will require Cass Street to be closed throughout this time. Please use alternate routes avoiding this area to reduce congestion, delay and inconvenience for your travels. Appropriate signage and barricades will be in place in and around the work areas.

TRAVERSE CITY- The City of Traverse City and Molon Excavating will be making utility connections in S. Garfield Ave. and Boyd Ave. starting Wednesday, November 2, 2016. The work is expected to be finished Thursday, November 3, 2016.

The westerly southbound lane of S. Garfield Ave. will be closed to all traffic between Lincoln St. and Hannah Ave. during the day and overnight. Boyd Ave. will be closed to all traffic at the S. Garfield Ave. intersection during the day and overnight. Turning movements onto Boyd Ave. from S. Garfield Ave. will be prohibited.

Please use alternate routes avoiding this area to reduce congestion, delay and inconvenience for your travels.  Appropriate signage and barricades will be in place in and around the work areas.
