Subject:           Invitation to Apply - Openings Available on Boards and Committees

Contact:          Katelyn Zeits, Deputy City Clerk, kzeits@traversecitymi.gov

Traverse City residents are invited to participate in the process of government by serving on one of the city's citizen boards and committees. Through this service, civic-minded citizens can become involved in their local government. The city, in turn, benefits from the knowledge, experience and expertise of our citizens.

Board of Zoning Appeals
The purpose of the Board of Zoning Appeals is to hear and decide on appeals brought to the Building Official, Zoning Administrator, etc. and to interpret provisions of the Zoning Code. The Board’s regular meeting date is the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Board of Tax Review
The purpose of the Board of Tax Review is to examine, review, and correct the assessment roll. Members of this board have minimal commitment, only meeting periodically throughout the year.  This person shall be a City resident.

Coast Guard City Committee
This committee serves in an advisory capacity to the City Commission to make recommendations on matter relating to operation, development, and planning of the United States Coast Guard services, facilities, and programs within the City of Traverse City. The goal of the Coast Guard City Committee is to educate our community on the value of a Coast Guard presence, create opportunities to acknowledge the professional work of the Coast Guard men and woman and to establish referrals for Coast Guard personnel and their families for services not provided by the Coast Guard.

For more information on these boards and other City boards, please visit www.traversecitymi.gov/boards.asp.

If you are interested in serving, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 231-922-4480 by Friday, June 9, 2017 for an “Application to Become Involved” or visit our website: http://www.traversecitymi.gov/boards.asp

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for all boards and commissions and are kept on file for a period of one year; applicants must not be in default to the City.

National Growth and Development Expert to Speak in Traverse City and Present 2017 Strongest Town Award

TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN-Charles Marohn, president of Strong Towns, a national nonprofit working to help America’s towns and cities become financially resilient will give a public presentation and present an award to the City of Traverse City on June 7.

The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Bijou by the Bay (181 E Grandview Pkwy). Mr. Marohn will begin by presenting the 2017 Strongest Town award to Traverse City, for its accomplishment winning the most votes during a series of challenges to prove its strength and resilience during Strong Towns’ annual bracket-style contest in March.

Mr. Marohn will then continue with a “Curbside Chat” presentation. This classic Strong Towns talk has been given in dozens of cities across the country and is centered on the question, “Why, despite all the growth America has experienced, do our cities struggle financially just to accomplish basic tasks?” The answers lie in the way we have developed; the financial productivity of our places. In the second half of the presentation, Mr. Marohn will specifically speak about issues in Traverse City and open the floor for discussion with attendees. Public officials and local change-advocates are especially invited to attend.

The event is free and open to the public and it is being offered by Strong Towns as a prize for the City of Traverse City for its accomplishments in the Strongest Town Contest.
