PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUBJECT: CITY OF TRAVERSE CITY TO HOST JUSTICE RICHARD BERNSTEIN
Contact: Benjamin Marentette, MMC, City Clerk (231) 922-4480

The City of Traverse City, along with the Traverse City Human Rights Commission, is proud to host a free event with Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the State Theater (233 E. Front St.).

Justice Richard Bernstein became the first legally-blind justice elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 2014. Prior to that, he advocated for disabled rights as the lead attorney with the public service division of the Sam Bernstein Law Firm in Farmington Hills. Working tirelessly to protect the rights and safety of people with and without disabilities, Justice Bernstein’s cases have often led to changes in accessibility across the country. From guidelines for safe access to commercial facilities, to ADA compliance in new road construction projects, to the preservation of special education funding, to safe and accessible City parks, the effects of his great work can be seen nationwide.

With awards and designations ranging from “Michiganian of the Year,” Detroit Business’ 40 Under 40, 2003-2004 Regeana Myrick Outstanding Young Lawyer, the 2008 John W. Cummiskey Pro Bono Award from the State Bar of Michigan, and many more, the City of Traverse City is proud to bring such an influential and compelling leader to talk with our Community.

“Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein is a great role model and an inspiration to those in our community as someone who has overcome obstacles some may have found insurmountable and has instead demonstrated perseverance at its greatest. I look forward to hearing his story and learning together with our community.” - City Manager Marty Colburn.

This event is free and open to all community members at the State Theater on Front Street in Traverse City. Tickets may be picked up in advance to reserve seats, or may be picked up at the door. Please join us for an inspiring afternoon with Justice Bernstein.
