A Homegrown Hill

There are a number of special qualities related to our beloved Hickory Hills, but the legacy lies within the hundreds of youth in our area who have grown up on the hill. The memories made at Hickory Hills, learning to ski, spending time with family, and meandering through the snow-covered hills with friends,  are shared amongst so many and will last a lifetime. The City’s small, but mighty, the hill has served as an authentic sense of home and will continue to do so for generations to come.

Multiseason Recreation

Hickory Hills Recreation/Ski Area has been owned and operated as a ski area and municipal park by the City of Traverse City since 1952 and has been an iconic natural setting within the Traverse City micropolitan area. The park is widely used by the greater community—offering active and passive recreational activities through all four seasons. Hickory Hills is an important community asset that provides affordable recreation opportunities for area youth and residents alike.

During the winter months, the Hickory Hills Ski Area offers 15 runs for skiers and snowboarders, including a bunny hill with a “carpet lift.” The top of Swede trail offers great views of Grand Traverse Bay and Downtown Traverse City.  Nordic skiers may enjoy a 5k trail meandering through the woods. During the Alpine & Nordic season, Hickory Hills has a Ski Patrol that assists in promoting safe skiing and offering first aid services.

Additional recreation is offered with the existing hiking and biking trail network. The park is also very popular due to the award-winning Disc Golf with two 18 hold courses offers three-season recreation.

Hickory Meadows

Hickory Meadows, a 112-acre nature preserve, sits adjacent to the Hickory Hills Recreation Area. The property consists of 3 miles of trails that are groomed during the winter ski season. Paths meander through meadows and upland forests to enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and dog walking. This area is also great for enjoying open space, scenic views, and wildlife viewing.
