Water & Sewer Bill Updates

The utility bill separation was implemented in December 2022. The City of Traverse City bills retained water, sewer, and irrigation. Traverse City Light & Power will bill electric and fiber.

Please review the following information to better understand how these items are being handled during the transition. Please note that the following items are ONLY applicable to those with electric balances or overpayments.

Outstanding Electric Balances

  • As the City of Traverse City and Traverse City Light & Power are now fully separated, electric payments can only be made to Traverse City Light & Power. Therefore, outstanding electric balances are being removed from the City of Traverse City bills in January.

  • Unpaid electric balances from November and prior will be removed from City of Traverse City accounts and are already reflected on your Traverse City Light & Power accounts.

  • For customers who had an unpaid electric balance on their City of Traverse City bill, there will be a negative adjustment/fee on your City of Traverse City January bill in the amount of the unpaid electric balance.

  • This will leave only water & sewer balances on your City of Traverse City account.

  • For Example: If a customer was charged $20.00 for electric services on the December bill and they did not pay the electric balance to The City of Traverse City, these charges are being removed from the January City of Traverse City bill. The removal will be shown in the Adjustments/Fees line of the January City of Traverse City bill as a -$20.00.

Overpayments or Credit Balances

  • Overpayments or credit balances on accounts from November and prior will be removed from City of Traverse City accounts and are already reflected on your Traverse City Light & Power account.

  • Customers with over payments that used credits on their December bill will see an adjustment for the credit amount on their January bill.

  • The January bill will reflect current charges plus any credits applied in December.

  • For Example: If a customer was charged $63.00 for water/sewer services in December and they had a credit balance of $5.00, they would have only paid $58.00 in December. However, as the credit balance is staying with Traverse City Light & Power (TCLP), the $5.00 credit will be corrected in January. So, they will owe their current January charges plus the $5.00 that will be shown in the Adjustments/Fees line of their January bill.

  • If customers intended a portion of their overpayment to be applied to water/sewer, accommodation can be made by contacting TCLP at 231-922-4940 or customerservice@tclp.org.

Late Fees/Penalties & Shut Offs

  • Due to the billing transition, late fees/penalties will not be charged

  • No shut offs will be performed during this transition period
