City of Traverse City Celebrates Arbor Day

April 27, 2022

Tree Planting Planned with Central Grade School Students

The City of Traverse City will be celebrating Arbor Day with a special tree planting event at Central Grade School on Friday, April 29, 2022 at 1:00 pm. Three trees will be planted by students from Central Grade School in front of the school on 8th Street.

“Sharing our love of trees with area youth is an honor. We look forward to educating students on the benefits of trees and contributing toward the continued growth of the City’s urban tree canopy,” says Parks and Recreation Superintendent Michelle Hunt.

Arbor Day is a celebration of the importance of trees to beautify our parks, provide us with clean air and water, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty. Celebrated on the last Friday in April, individuals and groups are encouraged to celebrate by planting trees. On April 29, 2022, National Arbor Day will celebrate its 150th anniversary.

As a Tree City USA for nearly 30 years, the City of Traverse City has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a community that meets all of its standards.

In 2018, the City of Traverse City Completed an Urban Canopy Assessment and Tree Management Plan for all City street trees. In 2022, the City launched a Public Facing Interactive Tree Map that displays the locations of street trees. The map includes important attributes such as genus, species, height, diameter at breast height (DBH), and other metrics for each individual tree.
