East Side Placemaking Project
Community Placemaking Workshop

The City of Traverse City is inviting community members to participate in an upcoming placemaking workshop focused on the future of the East Side Social District, an effort made possible through a recently awarded $100,000 Community Placemaking Grant from Project for Public Spaces, with support from General Motors.

As part of the first phase of the City’s partnership with Project for Public Spaces, this workshop will help shape a shared vision for enhancing the East Side Social District into a more vibrant, accessible, and welcoming community space. The engagement process reflects a broader commitment to community-driven design, building on the national recognition the project received as one of only a few selected grant recipients across the country.

Community members are encouraged to attend and share their ideas on how the space can better serve residents and businesses.

Participants can expect a fast-paced, engaging, and participatory experience. The workshop will include both indoor discussion and on-site exploration, giving attendees the opportunity to directly interact with the space and contribute ideas in real time. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

The East Side Social District, established in 2024, has quickly become a neighborhood gathering place. Through this placemaking process, the City aims to build on that success by addressing key considerations such as safety, accessibility, connectivity, and long-term functionality, while maintaining the character and energy that define the space.

“This is an opportunity for the community to help shape a place that reflects how people want to gather, connect, and experience this area,” said Planning Director Shawn Winter. “The success of this project depends on meaningful public input, and we encourage anyone who uses or cares about this space to participate.”

Take the Survey
For those unable to attend the workshop, the City encourages participation in the East Side Social District user survey to better understand how the space is used. Whether or not you plan to attend, the City values and appreciates your input.
