The City of Traverse City extends its deepest sympathy to the victims, their families, and all those affected by the tragic stabbing incident that occurred at the Walmart in Traverse City on July 26, 2025.
While the incident did not occur within the City of Traverse City, it has had a profound impact on our community. We are grateful to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, who is leading the investigation, the Michigan State Police for their rapid and professional response, nd many other local agencies who responded swiftly and worked together to ensure public safety. We also recognize and appreciate the courage of the citizens who intervened to stop further violence.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the Traverse City Police Department and Traverse City Fire Department personnel who responded and provided critical support at the scene. Their readiness to assist beyond City boundaries reflects the professionalism and dedication of our public safety teams.
In addition, we are deeply thankful to the skilled staff at Munson Medical Center for the urgent and compassionate care they are providing to the victims.
A shared statement from Mayor Amy Shamroe and Interim City Manager Benjamin Marentette said, “Traverse City is a place of love and firmly-denounces all forms of violence. We offer up love, support and peace to the victims and all who care about them, our first responders and healthcare providers."
Further information and updates on the incident will be provided by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office, the lead agency handling the investigation.
