Marentette Appointed as Interim City Manager
Marentette to Serve as Interim through January 2026
On July 21, 2025, the City Commission unanimously approved an agreement appointing City Clerk Benjamin Marentette to serve as Interim City Manager through January 2026, following the recent vacancy in the position.
“Benjamin Marentette has been a steadfast presence in our City government for over two decades, consistently demonstrating a deep commitment to public service and a willingness to step in whenever needed. His institutional knowledge, steady leadership, and collaborative approach make him uniquely qualified to guide us through this transition. Appointing Benjamin as Interim City Manager will ensure stability for our staff, the City Commission, and the community as a whole,” stated Mayor Amy Shamroe.
Marentette delivered prepared remarks to the City Commission outlining his leadership approach and vision ahead of his appointment as Interim City Manager. His speech provided a clear and strategic overview of his priorities, leadership style, and expectations for staff, the Commission, and the community.
Marentette emphasized that he does not view the interim role as a temporary caretaker position. He intends to be an active and engaged leader, focusing on a number of key initiatives such as implementing Traverse City’s newly adopted Strategic Action Plan. Central to his strategy is the use of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) to align Citywide efforts and measure meaningful outcomes.
With over 25 years in public service, including more than 13 years as City Clerk, Marentette brings deep institutional knowledge, a collaborative approach, and professional training that includes a six-year public leadership development program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
A Collaborative and Accountable Leadership Style
Marentette outlined his leadership philosophy that prioritizes respect, openness, and continuous improvement. He outlined expectations for a workplace culture built on:
- Interdepartmental collaboration and innovation
- Professionalism and accountability at all levels
- Celebrating staff achievements and recognizing exemplary service
- Supporting employee well-being through improved HR policies and work-life balance
He emphasized the importance of authentic communication, constructive feedback, and a shared commitment to the City's mission. He also invited staff to respectfully challenge him when necessary, reinforcing his belief in transparency and mutual trust.
Partnership with the Commission and Community
Marentette called on the City Commission to maintain professional standards in interactions with staff and to direct any concerns through appropriate channels. He asked for a shared commitment to professionalism and recognition of staff contributions. He also encouraged residents to engage respectfully, share ideas and feedback, and acknowledge the work of public servants.
Prepared for Sustainable, Long-Term Impact
After being selected as City Manager in 2023 and later declining the position, Marentette addressed his reflection on his decision and the personal growth that followed. He noted the importance of setting sustainable boundaries and maintaining a healthy balance to serve effectively over the long term. He expressed that he feels fully prepared and energized to lead, stating that this interim appointment serves as an opportunity for the Commission and the community to evaluate mutual fit.
To promote alignment and accountability, Marentette proposed regular closed-session check-ins throughout the interim term.
Acknowledgment and Commitment
Marentette concluded by expressing appreciation for his colleagues, the City staff, and community supporters, and affirmed his readiness to begin immediately:
“I’m ready to hit the ground running tomorrow if you’ll give me the honor to do so.”
