In 2021, the City Commission approved awarding a contract to complete the West Boardman Lake Loop, from 14th Street to Medalie Park. Completing the Loop will showcase the region's natural, cultural and recreational resources. The trail will help share the story of both the Boardman River's and the community's transformation by highlighting our unique freshwater environment and featuring captivating public art installations. The Loop will help support healthier and stronger communities and economies.

Phase 1 of the project, 14th Street to NMC's Campus, was completed in July 2021.

Phase 2 of the project was completed in July 2022 and stretched to Medalie Park. The completion of the loop included a boardwalk spanning over Boardman Lake and additional bridges near Medalie Park. Now complete, bicyclists and pedestrians are able to circumnavigate the Boardman Lake Trail through a four +mile loop that is a part of the TART Trails network.

Funding

The City, in partnership with TART Trails, Garfield Township, and Grand Traverse County worked together to complete this project. This multiple-year planning initiative has been made possible through a collaboration with local organizations and financial contributions from a number of local and state agencies, individual donations, and grants over several years, including an MDOT TAP grant for $2,512,750, and a $3,235,000 10-year bond by the City of Traverse City. Charter Township of Garfield gifted $800,000 for a trail maintenance endowment to the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. The endowment will ensure future sustainable funding along the trail.
