Murchie Bridge Underpass; Water over pathway

(Mouth of the Boardman River)

 

TRAVERSE CITY- the Murchie Bridge underpass at the mouth of the Boardman River is experiencing high lake water levels. Caution; periodic water over the pathway may exist and pedestrians and cyclists should exercise care when using this route or seek alternative crossing routes at safe signaled intersections.

 

Appropriate signage is in place which informs people that the condition may exist and a map displayed for direction to the next nearest signaled road crossing locations.

City Commissioner Michele Howard submitted her resignation from the City Commission to City Clerk Benjamin Marentette; her resignation is effective September 23, 2019.   Commissioner Howard’s term expires November 8, 2021.   A copy of Commissioner Howard’s resignation is attached to this media release. 

Commissioner Howard was appointed to the City Commission on December 8, 2016, to fill a vacancy left when former Commissioner Ross Richardson resigned.   Commissioner Howard was subsequently elected to a full four-year term by city voters at the November 7, 2017, election.   Marentette indicated, “It has been a pleasure to work with Commissioner Howard and watch her enthusiasm and energy devoted to Traverse City.   We look forward to working with her over the next few months and wish her well as she transitions toward leading the Traverse Area District Library.” 

According to City Clerk Benjamin Marentette, the City Charter allows the City Commission to appoint someone to serve from the effective date of Commissioner Howard’s resignation until November 11, 2019.   A discussion on if the City Commission wishes to pursue appointing someone to fill Commissioner Howard’s seat from September 23, 2019, to November 11, 2019,is scheduled for the July 8, 2019, City Commission Meeting.   The balance of Commissioner Howard’s term, which will expire November 8, 2021, will be filled at the November 5, 2019, election.

The City Clerk’s Office will have the necessary paperwork to file for election to the final two years of Commissioner Howard’s term available on Tuesday, July 2, 2019; and the filing deadline for election to the seat is Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at 4 p.m. with the City Clerk’s Office.

Starting Monday, July 1, 2019

TRAVERSE CITY- The intersection of West Front Street and Madison Street will operate as an all-way stop controlled intersection starting Monday, July 1st.  Advance warning signs will be in place on West Front Street to notify drivers of the change.

Cochlin and Hamilton Street Closures

7/1 – 7/12/2019

TRAVERSE CITY- The City of Traverse City and Elmer’s Crane and Dozer, Inc. will be resurfacing Cochlin St. and Hamilton St. between Beadle St. and E. Eighth St. The work is expected to start the week of July 1st and be substantially complete by Friday July 12, 2019. Schedule is subject to change due to weather.

The contractor will remove the existing pavement, grade and compact the existing gravel base, adjust drainage structure covers and overlay with hot mix asphalt.

Cochlin St. and Hamilton St. will be closed to through traffic.

Proper barricades and signage will be in place. Delays can be expected. Please use alternate routes avoiding this area to reduce congestion.

Shoulder/Lane Closures

6/24 – 7/3/2019

TRAVERSE CITY- The City of Traverse City, Elmer’s Crane and Dozer and Bella Concrete Construction will be repairing existing sidewalk along S. Garfield Ave. between E. Front St. (US-31) and Centre St. as well as E. Eighth St. between Railroad Ave. and Munson Ave. (US-31) rated poor and very poor.

The project is expected to start Monday, June 24, 2019 and be substantially complete by Wednesday July 3, 2019. The street shoulder or lanes will be closed at the work zones.

Please use caution in and around the work zones to promote pedestrian and worker safety. Appropriate signage and barricades will be in place.

800 Block Carver St. Closure 

Carver St. will be closed June 24th and June 25th, 2019

TRAVERSE CITY- Motorists and pedestrians should be aware that Leelanau Redimix will be closing the 800 Block of Carver St. between Rose St. and Grant St. for utility work.  This work will cause closures and disruptions to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.   This closure will take place on Monday June 24th, 2019 at 7:00 a.m. and will re-open by 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 25th, 2019.  This will cause disruptions to pedestrian and vehicle traffic.  The work is weather dependent.  Carver St. between Rose St. and Grant St. will be impacted.

Appropriate signage will be in place and access to all businesses and residences will be maintained at all times. 

Please use alternate routes avoiding this area to reduce congestion, delay and inconvenience for your travels.

Clinch Street Closure- June 18th

TRAVERSE CITY- The City of Traverse City Water and Wastewater Maintenance Department will be conducting water system maintenance in the 1200 Block of Clinch Street, on Tuesday June 18th.  The 1200 Block of Clinch Street will be closed from Baldwin Street to Boon Street to complete the work. The work is expected to last from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Please use alternate routes avoiding this area to reduce congestion, delay and promote worker safety. Lane Closures, Traffic Shifts & Detour

6/10 – 7/1/2019

TRAVERSE CITY- The City of Traverse City and Elmer’s Crane and Dozer, Inc. will be resurfacing S. Garfield Ave. between Centre St. and N. Forestlane Dr. (south City limits). The work is expected to start on Monday, June 10, 2019 and be substantially complete by Monday, July 1, 2019. Schedule is subject to change due to weather.

The contractor will mill the existing asphalt surface, replace some drainage structure covers and overlay with hot mix asphalt.

Southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane through the project limits. Northbound traffic between N. Forestlane Dr. and Carver St. will be reduced to one lane. Northbound traffic between Carver St. and Centre St. will be detoured at Carver St. to Hastings St. to Centre St.

Northbound through truck traffic is encouraged to turn right at Boon St. and use Hastings St.

Kinross St. and Baldwin St. at S. Garfield Ave. will be closed to all traffic. Eastbound and westbound traffic on Centre St., Carver St. and Boon St. will be maintained.

The posted speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph prior to and through the project limits.

Proper barricades and signage will be in place. Delays can be expected. Please use alternate routes avoiding this area to reduce congestion.

1200 Block East Front St. Lane Shifts

 

TRAVERSE CITY- Motorists and pedestrians should be aware that the Traverse City Water & Sewer Department will be shifting traffic lanes to perform water system repairs in the 1200 Block of East Front St, between Milliken Dr. and Garfield Ave. This work will cause disruptions to pedestrians and vehicular traffic. These lanes shifts will begin at approximately 7PM Wednesday, June 5th, 2019 to approximately 7AM Thursday, June 6th, 2019. The work is weather dependent.
