DTE Conducts Final Component to Gas Line at Barlow
As a final component to the of the new gas main installation, DTE will ensure that the gas line maintains the proper odorization of the gas once it is put into service to safeguard customers. To ensure that the new line does not absorb odorant, DTE will “cure” the new line and burn off the gas in a controlled flare. This process is scheduled to begin the evening of Wednesday, September 28. DTE is working with the Grand Traverse County Road Commission to close a short portion of Barlow Street, just north of Airport Rd from 6 PM Wednesday evening until 6 AM Thursday morning.
During this period, DTE and Miller Pipeline staff will set up odorization injector equipment near the corner of Barlow and Carver and separately, flare equipment off of Barlow Street, just north of Airport. The line will be gassed up and odorization material injected into the new main that will then be burned off in a controlled flare at the south end of the line. This “flare” is expected to last between 5 and 6 hours and will be visible to any passers-by.
DTE staff will then monitor the odorization levels maintained within the line over the next few days and will make any necessary adjustments to the odorization levels. A final flare of a shorter duration is then expected to be conducted sometime around October 5th.
