The Planning Department is currently open by appointment only. Most things may be handled digitally. Please call our office (231) 922-4778 and we will be happy to help!

All project application forms may now be submitted digitally by emailing dweston@traversecitymi.gov; or mailed to: 400 Boardman Avenue, Traverse City, MI 49686

The functions and responsibilities of the Planning Department include being professional staff to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Historic Districts Commission and the Grand Traverse Commons 

Joint Planning Commission.

The Department is also responsible for the administration and enforcement of City land-use regulations, ongoing land use planning efforts, grant preparation and administration, Capital Improvement Program plans, strategic planning processes, comprehensive plans, neighborhood plans, campus plans, policy recommendations, implementation and management.

Currently, the Planning Department refers to the following approved plans:

The Department reviews all development proposals and sign permits. Land Use and Sign Permits are overseen by the Zoning Administrator.

Code Enforcement

Our Department's Code Enforcement Officer is concerned about the preservation, maintenance and aesthetics of all residential, commercial and industrial properties throughout the city. Code Enforcement works with citizens to resolve issues which impact the quality of life in Traverse City by enforcing a broad range of public health and safety regulations including rental housing, zoning, health, parking, public nuisance, and other safety codes.
